When Should You Start Wedding Dress Shopping?
And how to know when it’s the right time for you
One of the most common questions brides ask is: “When should I start looking for my wedding dress?”
And the answer isn’t always as straightforward as you might think.
Traditionally, you’ll hear advice like “start 12–18 months before your wedding”, but that advice is largely based on made-to-order wedding dresses, long lead times and allowing plenty of time for fittings and alterations.
If you’re shopping differently, particularly if you're looking for an off-the-peg wedding dress, your timeline can look very different.
So, when should you actually start wedding dress shopping?
The traditional wedding dress shopping timeline
In a traditional bridal boutique, wedding dresses are usually made to order.
That means:
You choose your wedding dress
The boutique orders your gown
You wait for it to be made and delivered
Once it arrives, alterations can begin
Because of these longer lead times, brides shopping for a made-to-order gown are generally encouraged to start looking well in advance.
But that isn't the only way to buy a wedding dress.
How is off-the-peg wedding dress shopping different?
If you’re choosing an off-the-peg wedding dress, the timeline is much more flexible.

The wedding dress you fall in love with is the dress you buy.
That means you don't necessarily need to start shopping a year or more before your wedding simply because you're worried about your dress arriving in time.

So, when should you start wedding dress shopping?
Instead of focusing purely on how many months you have until the wedding, I think there’s a more useful question to ask:
Am I ready to find my wedding dress?
You might be ready to start shopping if:
your wedding date is set
you have a rough wedding dress budget in mind
you're starting to think about your bridal style
you feel excited, even if you're a little nervous, about trying dresses on
you're ready to make a decision if you find the one
You absolutely don't need to know exactly what dress you want before your appointment. That's part of the fun.

Can you start wedding dress shopping too early?
Sometimes, yes.
If you know you aren't ready to make a decision, trying on wedding dresses can feel more overwhelming than exciting.
You might fall in love with a gown but not feel ready to buy it, or try so many dresses over a long period that you start second-guessing what you actually want.
This is particularly worth considering when shopping off-the-peg because the collection doesn't stay the same.
If you find a dress you love but decide to come back six months later, we can't guarantee it will still be here.
Shopping is often much more enjoyable when you're ready to choose, rather than simply browsing.
Have I left it too late to buy a wedding dress?
If your wedding is only a few months away, don't panic.
One of the biggest benefits of an off-the-peg wedding dress is that there's no designer ordering time.
At & She Loves Bridal, every gown is already here in our Berkshire bridal studio and available to take home.
You will still need to consider alterations, however. Depending on your chosen gown and the fit, you'll want to allow enough time for any adjustments before the wedding.
So while you don't necessarily need months and months to find your dress, giving yourself some breathing room can make the whole experience more relaxed.
Is six months enough time to buy a wedding dress?
If you're buying off-the-peg, six months can give you much more flexibility than you might expect.
There's no need to wait for your gown to be made and delivered because you're buying an existing wedding dress.
Once you've found the one, it's yours.
You'll simply need to factor in any alterations you want before the wedding.
This is one of the reasons off-the-peg can work so well for brides who don't have, or simply don't want, the traditional 12–18 month bridal shopping timeline.
The wedding dress shopping sweet spot
